The London and Southampton Railway was first proposed in 1831 and the bill approved by Parliament in 1834 at a cost of £900,000. The section between Basingstoke and Winchester opened on 11 May 1840 – and was the final part of the London and Southampton Railway to be completed. Prior to its construction, all of the traffic between London and Southampton was carried by eight stage coaches, four wagons per week, and one barge weekly on the Basingstoke Canal!

The Northbrook Arms reopened under new ownership in July 2020. As well as a traditional ‘pub offering’ the site also hosts a number of public and private events such as stand-up comedy evenings, small weddings and birthdays. As part of a complete renovation of the site, the Northbrook Arms is also home to self-catering holiday accommodation and eventually (expected completion 2023) will include an indoor pool and spa facility. The Northbrook Arms is the perfect country retreat whether you’re looking for a drink and a catch up with friends or a dream family holiday – all provided in the stunning back drop of East Stratton Village – a quintessential English dwelling place.
